The Senate chairman on Friday summoned the 93rd session of the Upper House on May 2, to debate judicial hearing of cases against former army chief and president Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf.
The step was taken in response to a requisition submitted by senators from all political parties, except Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), in the House on the concluding day of the last session.
According to a circular issued by the Senate Secretariat, the chairman had summoned the House to meet on May 2 in exercise of powers conferred on him by clause (3) of Article 54 read with Article 61 of the constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
Under these articles the Senate chairman, in response to a requisition submitted by senators, does not require any directions from the government on summoning the House. These articles authorise him to call the House in session unilaterally.
The requestors, while submitting the requisition for the senate session, said serious proceedings regarding conduct of elections and judicial hearing of cases against former army chief Pervez Musharraf were underway and they feared that following his sub-jail custody at his farmhouse, he could be airlifted to any other country.
“So we need the House in session,” said the requestors including Senator Zahid Khan, Ishaq Dar and Raza Rabbani while talking to media personnel outside Parliament House after submitting the requisition.
