Reacting to Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s challenge to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif for a television debate, PML-N Central Secretary Information Mushahid Ullah Khan Tuesday said that Imran Khan had now backtracked from his challenge to contest polls against Nawaz Sharif to just a television debate.

“He who had been vowing to contest polls from all the constituencies against Mian Nawaz Sharif in the past, now talks of holding debate with PML-N chief in television talk show,” the party spokesman said in a statement.

He said that challenge of TV debate with PML-N chief was a publicity stunt of the PTI chief amidst election days, terming it as an immature move.

Furthermore, he said that Imran Khan should have contested the election against Nawaz Sharif to challenge his popularity and political wisdom instead of merely a TV debate.

Futhermore, Senator Pervez Rashid said that the PTI chief should first learn some manners before challenging the PML-N leader.

He did not confirm or deny whether the PML-N chief would take up the challenge.

“Those who are calling Nawaz Sharif a coward should explain where were they hiding during the ‘lawyer’s movement,” Rashid said.

“Imran is that political leader who needed security to protect himself from his own party workers,” he added.

Responding to Imran Khan’s announcement to computerise land records during his speech in Renalakurd, Pervez Rashid said perhaps Khan was not informed that former Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had already completed the task.

  1. I agree manners maketh a man but let us see them during the t.v debate. Mr Nawaz shariff has been quite vocal otherwise. It is time he faced the litmus test. The gaunlet has been thrown–pick it up and try hooking Imran for a six.

  2. Nawaz will never agree to the debate. He is a coward. If he was a true leader, he would welcome this oppurtunity to highlight his accomplishments and show the nation that he is capable of leading.

    • He is electable but incapable of leading. One aspires to lead but given the opputurnity
discovers that he is incapable of being a leader. This is the tragedy of Nawaz Shariff.

  3. Obviously in such a debate Nawaz would be at a disadvantage, because he has been in power and there would be many points against him which would be highlighted by Imran, while Imran has not been in power so there would be not much with Nawaz to talk against him. It would be reasonable to hold such debate when Imran also gets a chance at power and then whether he walks his talk could be debated. At present Imran Khan is only talks while Nawaz Sharif is subjected to scrutiny over his performance, his achievements would be overshadowed by his failures as happens in all debates and Pakistani emotional psyche is such that negativity suppresses positivism. So not a fair debate it would be.

  4. Nawaz Sharif is no National Leader, his mere equating the peace dialogue with Vajpayee to the dialogue with Taliban highlights his lack of comprehending the contextual differences between the two situations. He should thank Zia ul Haq and Allah to reach these political heights…… He is a coward and will not take the challenge of a debate against Imram Khan…….

    • While Nawaz Sharif was Prime Minster, in 1999, his government was incomplete. His debate should be against Musharraf.

Imran Khan usually mocks Punjab's progress and coming to that, Shahbaz Sharif was the Chief Minister not too long ago. It suits both of them to go after one another.

  5. Debates occur between those who are in power and those who want to be in power. In the U.S when Democrats are in power, the Republicans debate. When Obama was President, Romey debated.

Nawaz Sharif is neither Prime Minster/President and nor is Imran Khan.

It has been known for sometime now that Imran does not speak against PPP. In fact it seems Imran Khan is not interested to go up against Raja Pervez Ahraf (Prime Minster) and Zardari (President) who are trying to get back their seat again
