As per a prediction by Pakistan Today that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) would voice support for former president Pervez Musharraf, MQM Chairman Altaf Hussain the other day demanded a fair chance for the former military ruler to defend himself in court.
Addressing MQM supporters in Mirpur Khas, Altaf said the former military ruler had surrendered himself to the justice system therefore he should be given an opportunity to defend himself against the charges being leveled against him.
He also said that all generals who had seized power and supported the dictator on October 12, 1999 should be tried.
Pakistan Today had earlier reported that MQM’s opinion was turning towards Musharraf. According to details, MQM workers were turning sympathetic towards the former dictator, who they felt, was being targeted because he was from a Mohajir background.
“A specific attitude of the media and judiciary towards the former dictator is fast spreading an impression among the Mohajir community that Musharraf is being taken to task unduly, while all his abettors and collaborators in imposition of emergency have been spared the humiliation. As Musharraf is a Mohajir and has no support from any corner, the top leadership of the MQM is seriously mulling announcing its support for the former president,” an MQM leader had said.
