With General (r) Pervez Musharraf put under house arrest, it is likely that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) would soon announce its support for him as sympathies are growing in party ranks for the former military ruler.

Well-placed sources in the MQM and All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) confirmed to Pakistan Today that leaderships of both parties were in contact.

“A specific attitude of the media and judiciary towards the former dictator is fast spreading an impression among the Mohajir community that Musharraf is being taken to task unduly, while all his abettors and collaborators in imposition of emergency have been spared the humiliation. As Musharraf is a Mohajir and has no support from any corner, the top leadership of the MQM is seriously mulling announcing its support for the former president,” an MQM leader said.

“We are concerned about the maltreatment being meted out to the former president and former chief of army staff. There is a feeling among the Mohajir community that Musharraf is being targeted and victimised for being a Mohajir,” the MQM leader said.

“The nation just saw what happened to those generals and politicians who were held responsible by the Supreme Court in the Asghar Khan case for taking bribes from the ISI. No one was touched but in Musharraf’s case all hell has broken loose. We are soon going to announce our support for the General,” the MQM leader added.

On the other hand, MQM spokesman Wasay Jalil admitted that a feeling of alienation amongst Mohajirs in upper Sindh had re-emerged since the trial of General Musharraf began.

However, he said that in spite of this feeling, his party would not make a public comment as the matter was sub-judice.

“Since we are done with the difficult task of tickets distribution, the party will discuss this issue within a day or two,” he added.

Aasia Ishaque, the APML secretary information, said Musharraf had the full backing of his party workers and they would welcome any political support.

Asked whether or not the General was expecting such treatment upon his return or if he had been trapped, Aasia said, “No, Musharraf has not been trapped. Before leaving for Pakistan, all options were discussed and he was actually expecting much worst. He knew he is facing biased judges and some venomous media personalities. But we have faith in God,” she said, adding that the current situation had not broken the General’s resolve to play his role in Pakistan.

Commenting on the statement by former spokesman of General Musharraf, Maj Gen (r) Rashid Qureshi who had sought the army’s intervention to save Musharraf, Aasia distanced her party from the statement, saying Rashid’s statement was his personal opinion and did not reflect the party’s policy.

“This might be his personal views. The APML has not sought the army’s intervention. Despite having reservations against the biased judges, we expect justice,” she said.

Maj Gen (r) Rashid Qureshi, a close associate of former president General (r) Pervez Musharraf, had asked the top military leadership on Saturday to intervene in the issue immediately before tensions between state institutions got worse.

Aasia said her party did have reservations over Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui of the Islamabad High Court, as he had been an activist of a religious political party and had also been the counsel of Lal Masjid cleric Abdul Aziz.

“Everyone knows that Abdul Aziz was involved in terrorism and he had led an armed rebellion against the state which triggered the Lal Masjid operation. Justice Shaukat Siddiqui got house arrest orders for the Maulana and also got Aziz’s BahriaTown residence declared as sub-jail,” she added.

She said that Justice Siddiqui contested 2002 election from the MMA’s platform for NA-54 Rawalpindi.

“How could you expect justice from such a political person who has also defended terrorists?” she added.

  3. Leave ethnic or sub-ethnic group; namely Mohajirs from central India or Mohaji's from East Punjab, most Pakistanis feel that JUDICIAL ACTIVISM has tended to take the shape of JUDICIAL REVENGE.

    General Musharraf needs to be treated with a great deal of respect for one of many reasons . Foremost being that the people who will follow him namely Zardari and Nawaz Sharif have left a blazing trial of evidence and prosecution is guaranteed if legal process takes hold.

    • Muhajir means immigrand and not refugees. Millions of Americans, Canadians, Australians etc are immigrants. There is no ethnicity involved in being Muhajir. I liked and agreed with your above comment. He does deserve for many reasons..

Why to cry against Mr. justice Siddiqui. The learned judge decided the matter in accordance with the law. Mushraf can appeal against the order. MQM must demand that the judges of their choice should hear the appeal. Wy MQM is NOT providing support of its legal advisors. The two punjabi advocates are the counsels for Mushraf despite the fact the said advocate are facing the displeasure of brother advocates.

  11. ATC Judge Kausar Abbas Ziadi is brother of Cap (R) Mansur Ziadi, who was court Martialed by Gen Musharraf. He was also caught again while running a security company in Islamabad and was supplying weapons to Black Waters.

    Similarly the corrupt judge Shokat Siddique who cancelled Musharaf’s bail, was an MMA candidate in 2002 GE and a lawyer of Lal Masjid.

    In my opinion, Gen Musharaf is not facing a trail but actually facing a judicial Terrorism.

    MQM and other political parties should support Mr. Musharraf as he is not only ex-Army Chief but a former president as well. RESPECT PM.

We are disgusted with the way these terrorists in the veils of judges are targeting our president for the strong man he has been for Pakistan against all its enemies.     • It seems the judiciary with nora leage 's pre plan Musharraf not to get qualify in running for elections. They wanted him to be busy in court cases. Look at the judges revengefulness they are giving dates every day. How come the lawyers prepare the cases and on the top of it the lawyers were not even allowed to meet Musharraf inspite of court order. Everything seems to be very strange.

      .I am searching for real supporters of Musharraf since he arrived after the advent of interim govt.Dont worry he preferred to live in Punjab as his Urdu speaking group never allowed him a single public meeting or warm reception in Karachi.But your see Punjab secured him, given him high profile security, more than 200 Punjabi men are at security risk for giving this white elephant a safe luxurious heaven who is disowned by his own community and fellow service men.
      He again proved to prefer trusting on Punjabi after Altaf bahi showed him trailer of " silence of eastern zone"

  29. Nawaz Sharif says "Mein Jhoot Nahin Bolta"in a public meeting but makes a ten year agreement and says there is no agreement until a Saudi Prince appears with a documents. So making an argument with supporters of such party who have no values is difficult. There is no match between Pervez Musharraf and any other leader in Pakistan. MQM and other parties in particular Muslim Leage (Q) who have a little respect for relations once they had, they should come out in open. Otherwise, we will be confined to Mullas Rule and many will have to leave Pakistan.

  33. Although Altaf Hussain probably has reservations – as he is outside the country and cannot risk greater leadership than him emerging – however the support for Mush in Karachi is a REALITY.

    Folks living in the north of Pakistan cannot fathom the level of support Mush has in Karachi – because in the north it can tend to be coloured by tribalism (which is stronger in north of Pakistan – because of the greater association with rural areas – where they have an almost undeniable servitude to the local maulvi – thus greater percentage of taliban-types in the north than in south of Pakistan – this is just the reality).

    Karachi is mostly urban – and folks who move there very rapidly assimilate to the ambience of Karachi – i.e. moderation/secular. This has been stretched in recent years with rapid influx of Swat refugees etc. perhaps (and the confusing behaviour of ANP in Karachi where we have witnessed ANP a secular party trying to go against MQM another secular party – to the great benefit of the Taliban entrants).

    In any case, MQM cannot ignore the Mush issue – even though their own party may have selfish interests to deny support – their voting base is overwhelmingly pro-Mush – both ideologically (more secuilar than the north), more mixed shia/sunni/various other denominations, more multi-ethnic, more understanding of economics and the power of jobs and wellbeing of people (above just some ideological servitude to the local mullah).

    That is, in Karachi you have less of a luxury of indulging in some fake-ideological stuff or to wage wars against other countries – that you can only do if you have surplus money or money from Arab countries, or drug money (all of which are in abundance in Afghan or areas bordering Afghan areas within Pak).

    So MQM WILL have to give some support to Mush – otherwise they risk alienating the voting base – already MQM has been heavily criticized for their wishy washy pro-PPP/anti-PPP behaviour and ignoring Mush will not help them.

    Although I would not be surprised if MQM support remains limited to some statements for now.

  34. MQM can not support Musharraf at this juncture openly . the leadership will wait and watch. Now the bigger question is who should be preferred , a dictator who toppled the elected government , sent the one PM to jail, another ex Pm to exile , declared emergency, arrested the chief Justice and ultimately paid the price for it. Is the situation is different , to me it is NO. In last four years Army's generals have been criticized for their wrong doings and folly Taliban were the brain child of army which has become monster and caused killings of more than forty thousands persons including the soldiers. Military's image is quite down for their foreign policy and also handling the issues in Baluchistan. Hence they can not help Musharraf . there can be legal complications for the treason charges. Let the commander face the trial may have some token punishment too and gain public sympathy for the humiliation . Supporting Musharraf based on the ethnicity only will not be paying. In politics no question for pay back a debt . Musharraf did for his own benefit . He too was in need of a civilian face to continue. And mind it any small punishmnt to Musharraf will pave the door from punishment of other guilty generals and politicians/ ministers which will ultimately be good for the country.

  35. I personally never thought that SC or Lower Court will not deliver justice in case of Musharraf The way the proceedings are going and by adding Clause 7 in by a Judge is perhaps wrong Never heard of it. This is a personal vendetta against RTD President
    Cases against are politically motivated. He was in the air when a coup took placed on the Pakistani Soil He was not directly involved. There were other general who carried out the coup, why blame him alone? I am sure he gets justice and is set free with dignity.

Justice should be equal for every one, if PM can be charged then why not CJ he took oath by PM. was not the was a crime plus his son how van a father does not know what his son is doing, second what about the present govt. are they all clean how can the courts allow raja rental to contest election again don't we all know what he has done to this country we are living in between a bunch of MUNAFIQS that all..

Musharraf & MQM are two faces of the same coin as already commented Musharaff is the biggest benefactor of MQM when he fully recognised them & gave them free hand in Karachi during his regime MQM today showing eyes & black mailing is all due to Musharaf as during( COD in London Benazir,Nawaz Sharif,Imran Khan ,JUIF did not invite them as all were of the opinion it is terrorist party) who being chief of Army fully supported them said see my sterenght in Karachi during the blood shed by MQM in Karchi in May. during CJ visit to Karachi Pakistans almost 90% army comes from Punjab,KP & Balucistan by saying that i am urdu speaking he tarnish Armys image.APML was just drama it is a branch of MQM
