Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Munawar Hasan on Sunday urged the interim government to convene a meeting of all political parties (APC) and law-enforcing agencies to evolve a strategy to hold elections timely and in a peaceful environment.
Referring to recent terrorist attacks on candidates of Awami
National Party (ANP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Munawar Hasan said problems might increase if acts of violence continued in the run up to elections.
He said it was the responsibility of the interim government to take steps for improving the situation by taking political parties, law-enforcing agencies and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on board.
This is necessary to give confidence to the masses, who will otherwise get disappointed, he added.
The JI chief said no political party alone could face the threat of terrorism and consensus should be built to tackle the challenge.
Responding to a question, he said the JI was going to contest elections alone, but the possibility of a coalition could be explored in case of a hung parliament.
He categorically rejected the impression that talks with the PML-N and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for seat adjustment could not succeed because JI was demanding more than its due share. He said no such thing was discussed in the talks with the two parties.
On differences with the Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), he said differences among political or religious parties were not of a permanent nature.
