Over three quarters of Mashkail’s total population of 20,000 has been affected by Tuesday’s earthquake that measured 7.8 on the Richter scale.
However the number of people affected by the quake in the town close to the Iranian border is likely to increase is likely to increase one a detailed survey that is being conducted there is completed.
According to the rapid survey report conducted by a Quetta-based NGO Balochistan Rural Support Programme (BRSP), more than 15,000 people were affected in the wake of the earthquake. “It was a rapid survey, however detailed assessment, including going door-to-door in each village, will be carried out later after donor agencies commit for relief goods,” said Mahboob Ali, the district coordinator of the BRSP.
He said the BRSP surveyors gathered this information after interviewing the people living in the area and sent a report to his organisation for further dispatching to donors/partners asking for their support in the provision of relief goods.
Another survey carried out by an NGO, Seher, said over 3,000 houses had been damaged. Seher Disaster Manager Rauf Jamal told Pakistan Today, “Our volunteers conducted the survey and found that around 3,000 houses were completely or partially damaged,” he said, adding that the houses partially damaged could not be used as they could collapse at any moment.
