MPs demand ECP perform within constitutional limits

Senators on Monday raised certain objections over decisions of the Election Commission and claimed it was exceeding its constitutional limits.

Members from various political parties raised concerns that some decisions of the commission would make campaign in remote areas of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa extremely difficult.

Senator Maulana Ghafoor Haidri, citing a decision of the ECP, said if transport was not provided to voters, it would cause difficulties for them in casting their votes and lower the turnout.

He said parliament was a supreme institution and it only parliament had the authority to legislate.

“All political parties made efforts to strengthen the Election Commission and interim government should provide security to the contesting candidates keeping in view law and order in the country,” he said.

Haidri complained over withdrawing his security and said he had two security guards for his protection in Qalat, but they had been withdrawn.

Senator Zahid Khan informed the House that candidates of ANP, MQM and PPP were getting life threats from Taliban.

“It is not the duty of ECP to change bureaucracy,” he added, urging the ECP to focus on holding free, fair and transparent elections.

Senator Mohsin Leghari apprised the House that some anti-democratic forces wanted to derail the democratic process in the country.

He said the democratic system was the only solution of all problems and efforts were being made to strengthen it.

Farrah Aqil also demanded the ECP provide security for voters so that voting turnout could increase.
