Afghan forces kill key Taliban commander

Afghan security forces backed by the NATO-led troops targeted and killed a key Taliban commander named Safiullah alias Shafiq in Wardak province 35 km west of Kabul, spokesman for provincial administration Ataullah Khogyani said.

Acting upon intelligence reports, the personnel of national security forces backed by the NATO-led forces raided a house in Masoomkhil village of Nurkh district and killed Safiq. Khogyani said.

“There were no civilian casualties, and Shafiq was the only person killed,” the official said. “Shafiq’s death is a major setback to the Taliban militants in Wardak province,” he added.

Taliban forces are yet to comment on the development.
