Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Saturday questioned acceptance of nomination papers of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif and said despite availability of strong evidence against him, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had accepted his papers.
“The fact is that during the period when he was in exile in Saudi Arabia, Nawaz Sharif paid zero tax. Apart from evidence available with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), this is borne out by Sharif himself through his nomination papers filed in May 2008 for NA-123 Lahore VI,” said PTI Information Secretary Shafqat Mahmood in a statement.
The PTI spokesman said the PML-N leadership had made another effort to conceal facts and also misstated taxes paid by Nawaz Sharif during the period from 2005 to 2007.
“When answering a question relating to taxes paid by the applicant, Nawaz Sharif in his papers had written he paid no tax during the years from 2005 through 2008. This was the period when Sharif had assets in Pakistan that were not shut down and he was receiving income,” he said.
“According to laws of Pakistan, every citizen who has local income, irrespective of where he or she resides, is required to file an income tax return and pay taxes. The fact is that Sharif was in exile, not his assets. Therefore, he had to file a return and pay his share of income tax,” said Mahmood.
The PTI spokesman questioned what business Sharif started all of a sudden that he started paying taxes the same year he arrived to Pakistan,” remarked Mahmood.
“The documents signed by Nawaz Sharif in 2008 indicating that he never paid any taxes while in exile are available with PTI. As soon as Sharif returned, he paid Rs 2 million as tax in 2009/10 and Rs 2.5 million in 2010/11. This tax was paid on income accrued from his shares in Chaudry Sugar Mills. The same mill was also producing dividends in the years he was in exile but no tax was paid,” he asserted.
The PTI leader said tax evasion by the Sharifs was not an issue which has come under scrutiny for the first time as Nawaz Sharif has been convicted in a tax evasion case in 1999 by the Lahore High Court. It was revealed that Sharif had failed to pay federal tax on a civilian helicopter owned by him which was worth $ 1 million at that time, said the PTI leader.

  1. Shafqat Mahmood is absolutely right. His arguments are strong and must be considered, at least, by the man who is so fond of suo moto and happens to be first cousin of Rana Sanaullah. At the same time, I would like to ask Shafqat Mahmood whether Imran Khan passes the test of Articles 62 & 63 after his confessions in his book.

  2. PTI is really afraid of Nawaz sharif. they should face him democratically instead of raising lams excuses. we still remember how Imran was canvassing for Musharraf referendum which is testimony of his love of Democracy.

    • We also remember how nawaz sharif made a deal with Musharraf to save his skin and ran out of the country. He also lied and denied making a deal for 10 years. nawaz is a coward and everyone following nawaz are also cowards. Besides, his hair is fake just like everything else about him 🙂

  3. maryam nawaz is a immoral person. she was sleeping with an army officer in the prime minister's residence when her father was in power.

  4. Only a coward nation would want another coward as their leader. nawaz cried in jail. there are pictures. he lied and zardari fooled him so many times that its not even funny. what nation would want a stupid prime minister like nawaz who gets fooled by everybody.

  5. NS supported Zardari. Corrupt judiciary protects Nawaz. If Nawaz is an honest person, then I am an angel.

  6. Nawaz is a dangerous person. He attacked SC. He kept replacing COAS. He does not get along with anybody. He is a tax cheat and a liar and he is fat with artificial hair.

  7. corrupt and coward, how can one pretend to be leader when the leader has to hide from the people he leads, this does not compute with me.

  8. Honest leaders are brave, they stand with their people and lead from the front. Nawaz and gang have no such qualities. They will follow money only.

  9. Always non sense from PTI. They should change their language before commenting. Third world comments without substance.

    • Well, what do you want people to say, he’s nice looking, cares for his people and has done wonders for Pakistan. He understands the situation of the common man and the daily struggle faced by many to provide for their families. There was no corruption in the sasti roti scheme, the yellow cab scheme, both were a success, he has no hidden assets abroad, he wants to transform the education system by handing out few laptops in Punjab, many more examples can be given to provide substance, but the blind and deaf will always be just that, blind and deaf.

  10. Nawab Shariff was sent on forced exile against the laws of Pakistan. It is indeed ironic that Shafqat Mahmud was either with Musharraf or with Nawaz Shariff, when these tax evasions took place. If we go by NS written statement that he did not pay taxes from 2008 to 2011, than FBR must asked did it serve any notice ob him. In any case the tax should be recovered from him now.

    • He was self exile, no one can be told to leave a county that they resident in!!! If it was up to Musharraf and the citizen of Pakistan he would have served criminal charges against him, but as it is a trend by corrupted Pakistani politician that they make a clean getaway from Pakistan and when the dust has settled they come back with the head up and chest out acting like nothing has happen. I seriously don't understand why Musharraf is being punished and not the other degraded politician (Shariff/Zardari). Paying tax now that is a whole new discussion, this guys got properties, power. Which politician pays for tax? I seriously don't understand why people like Nawaz he ruined the country, and now he is making false promises just to get into power. He does not care about us Pakistan and only cares about himself and his family. Please save Pakistan and don't give him importance/ vote for him. Pakistan Zindabad.

  11. why PTI is running its compaign agaisnt only PMNL N for what .Why they are not taking confidence of common man`s welfareAND WHY THEY ARE ESCAPING FROM PUBLIC?Question arises PTI is doing its works under outsiders`s dictations and no particular manifeto for public.Imran Khan is losing its position and worsen his character by criticising only against PML N and he does not see anybody else? It seems that Imran khan is working under the dirctives of America only,

  12. Any criticism coming from one of the ultimate power 'lotas' (Shafqat Mahmood, once a PPP loyalist, then a PML(N) loyalist and eventually a Musharraf loyalist) any such criticism is laughable.

  13. If 62/63 were to be applied strictly nobody including IMRAN Khan, Asif Zardari, Nawaz Shariff, Musharraf, Farooq Memon, Altaf Hussain, Bilour, Afsandyar Wali, Babar Ghauri, Amin Faheem etc would qualify. If Pakistan can survive after death of Quaid e Azam, it can do so without any one of them. All the political parties have their share of tax defaulters and Land Mafia Dons, including PTI.

  14. Fellows, their was no reality in Musharaf's plane hijacking, it was just a story. Sharif was not out from country because of deal but upon orders of US as he was innocent and main issue was to fulfill US plans against Afganistan.

  15. A nation that seems to know everything about every corrupt person in Pakistan yet you continue to elect the same people,if they are all that bad,why do you keep electing them again and again and again, then come in here sounding like scholars full of solutions. For once just shut up and vote for the right reasons and for the right person.

    • And by the way, nothing will happen to any of these politicians,Zardari,Sharifs and even Mushy, they will all walk away, its the Pakistani way,the powerful are untouchables.

    • Well said thats why we need a new leader, PTI has new vision and the youth of our future can direct us to a Naaya Pakistan. We need a change and a change can only happen if we seriously desire it. Vote for a change, vote for PTI In Shaa Allah Thanks
