The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) on Friday declared the appointment of Security and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) chairman illegal and invalid.
A two-judge bench headed by Justice Jawwad S Khawaja issued the brief order in the case. According to the judgment, the appointment of former chairman SECP Muhammad Ali was illegal and, hence, invalid. The court maintained that rules and regulations were not adhered to in the appointment of the SECP chairman and clause 5 of SECP rules is in conflict with the law and constitution. Moreover, the SECP chairman’s position was not advertised, court ruled, ordering the federal government to appoint a new SECP head soon.
