The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) on Friday declared the appointment of Security and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) chairman illegal and invalid.
A two-judge bench headed by Justice Jawwad S Khawaja issued the brief order in the case. According to the judgment, the appointment of former chairman SECP Muhammad Ali was illegal and, hence, invalid. Therefore, the court instructed the federal government to appoint the new SECP head soon.
The appointment was indeed illegal and a clear demonstration of how the previous governement filled top jobs without announcing them or having a proper selection process in place. This person had no previous experience in this field and also SECP still employs people of disrepute ( a serving commissioner has a court case pending for years).
