SC summons Musharraf for treason case

The Supreme Court on Monday summoned former president General (R) Pervez Musharraf for Tuesday in the treason case against him.

The apex court further directed Islamabad police to ensure implementation of its order and to make sure Musharaf, who is in the federal capital, to appear before the bench.

Moreover, the bench also directed Interior secretary to ensure that Musharraf did not leave the country and ordered that his name be added to the exit control list (ECL).The court also issued a notice to the federal government for its stance on the case.

A two-member bench of the apex court, led by Justice Jawad S Khawaja, heard the petition against Musharraf on Monday after Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry recused himself from the initially formed three-member bench. Earlier, President LHCBA, Rawalpindi Bench, Taufiq Asif, and Maulvi Iqbal Haider filed the petitions under Article 184(3) of the Constitution. The former army chief returned to Pakistan on March 24 to contest general election after spending more than four years in self-imposed exile. Musharraf had filed papers to contest the general elections from four seats, including Karachi, Islamabad, Chitral and Kasur.
