Culling of election hopefuls continues

Thursday proved to be a difficult day for election hopefuls as several leaders of the former government and opposition parties either faced rejection of their nomination papers or were sent to prison altogether.

They didn’t have an education

In an almost domino-like effect, the tragic comedy began in the early hours of Thursday morning when Additional District and Sessions Judge Sheibar Khan sentenced former Awami National Party’s (ANP) lawmaker from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Syed Aqil Shah, to one year imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 3000 for holding a fake degree.

Shah became the fourth MP from Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa to be convicted on the charges of fake degree. Earlier former independent MPAs Sardar Ali Khan from Swabi, Khalifa Abdul Qayoom, an independent MPA from Dera Ismail Khan and Kishwar Kumar, JUI-F former minority MPA had been sentenced to various terms over the last few days. Another independent MPA from Swabi, Javed Ali, was also sentenced on the charges of dual nationality.

Shah had served in the previous provincial cabinet as minister for sports, tourism and archives. He was elected from PF-4 Peshawar, from where he was contesting again when his electoral ambitions were cut short.

Barely two hours later, former member of the National Assembly Jamshed Dasti was handed a three-year jail term by a district sessions judge in Muzaffargar.

A tearful Dasti was arrested in the court premises and was shifted to a jail amidst security. The former MNA was also handed a penalty worth Rs 5,000.

Dasti announced that his brother would now contest from his constituency in the upcoming general elections. His lawyers said that they would move the high court against his disqualification.

Moreover, a district and sessions judge in Pakpattan declared a former Member of National Assembly, Syed Salman Mohsin Gilani, of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) a proclaimed offender over possessing a fake degree.

Gilani was elected as an MNA from NA-165 Pakpattan in the 2008 election.

ECP takes ideology seriously

Ayaz Amir’s commitment to Pakistan’s ideology was put to question as the Election Commission of Pakistan told the renowned columnist and PML-N hopeful that his nomination papers had been rejected.

According to details, an objection on Amir for writing articles “against the ideology of Pakistan” was filed against his nomination papers by complainant Babar Salim.

Amir told a private TV channel that he had not received the verdict so far, but had been informed that the papers were reportedly rejected on objections raised by the president of a local press club over his two articles on the ideology of Pakistan.

The decision against Amir’s nomination papers was taken by an ECP returning officer on Wednesday.

FAISAL SALEH and ABID IMAM

Furthermore, the ECP disqualified former Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leader Faisal Saleh Hayat and politician Syeda Abida Hussain’s son, Abid Imam.

Hayat was contesting as an independent candidate, while Imam submitted his nomination papers as the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) candidate.

Imam, who was contesting election for the first time, had filed an application against Hayat which resulted in the disqualification of Hayat, who had been winning seats from his constituency without fail.

There’s more…

Today (Friday) will also be a difficult day as the Higher Education Commission deadline expires and cases of at least 140 leaders are lying pending with no follow up. Who will be next?
