American Coco Vandeweghe caused a first-round upset at the Monterrey Open by knocking out French second seed Marion Bartoli.

Despite losing the opening set, world number 96 Vandeweghe dug in to achieve a 4-6 6-3 6-1 victory.

The success against Bartoli, who stands 14th in the world rankings, represents easily the biggest win of Vandeweghe’s season and takes the 21-year-old through to a second-round clash with 19-year-old fellow US player Lauren Davis.

In her opener, Davis took the first set 6-2 against Russian opponent Olga Puchkova, who then retired due to injury.

Japan’s eighth seed Ayumi Morita saw off Slovak player Jana Cepelova 6-0 6-1, while 16-year-old Croatian rising star Donna Vekic was among the other first-round winners, beating American Julia Cohen 6-0 6-4.
