Nocturnal showers, amidst interplay of heart-stopping thunderclaps and occasional lightning bolts running across the heavily overcast night-sky, whipped parts of the metropolitan.
The downpour that was supported by gusty winds was reported from Malir, Airport area, Model Colony, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Federal B Area, North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Paposh Nagar, Lasbela, Guru Mandir and adjoining areas.
On the other side, rains also lashed Hyderabad, Thatta, Gharo and adjoining areas, as well as Hub.
According to Met Department only North Karachi received as much as 12.6 millimetres of rain, which left swathes of roads submerged under rainwater, thus bringing the traffic to a complete halt. The unexpected downpour dampened the roads, thus causing many a motorcyclist to slip and leaving hundreds stranded away for their homes while they waited for the rain to stop.
Hailstorms followed the rain in some parts of city and sent a wave of chill down the spine of the metropolitan, while people enjoyed the downpour by listening to music as pellets of frozen rain pelted down on their the windows of their houses and vehicles.
The Met Department had forecasted that the current spell of rains was likely to continue for the next 12 hours.
