Muslim mob targets Christian locality in Gujranwala ‘for disrespecting Islam’

In a renewed attack on minorities, a violent Muslim mob attacked a Christian locality in Gujranwala on Wednesday, damaging shops, houses and vehicles belonging to the local Christians following a clash between the youths of the two communities last night, Pakistan Today has learnt.

According to initial information, a group of Christian boys was snubbed by a local cleric for playing music on their cell phones while passing by a mosque on Tuesday evening.

“Our boys were passing the mosque when the prayer leader objected to their playing music on cell phones. The boys turned off the music at that moment but switched it on again after covering some distance. The cleric raised a clamour and accused the boys of showing disrespect to Islam. As word spread of the incident, we immediately went to the police post in our colony and shared our security concerns with them. The police told us not to worry and assured us that they would contain the situation but no measures were taken,” Pervaiz, a resident of Francis Colony in Gujranwala, told Pakistan Today.

He said that around 2pm, a Muslim mob from the nearby Naroki village attacked the neighbourhood, ransacking shops, houses and around 5-7 vehicles parked on the road. “We saw a police mobile of the area’s checkpost parked in the vicinity but they did not intervene and let the mob damage our property,” he said, adding that the mob dispersed after local Christians took out their weapons and started firing in the air to deter them.

Pakistan Today made repeated attempts to contact the police officials concerned, including Regional Police Officer Amin Waince but they did not receive the calls.

After playing the role of a silent spectator, the police took action and resorted to aerial firing and hurling stones indiscriminately  at the mob to disperse it. The mob also pelted stones back at the police.

      • Exactly. Christians, Hindus, Shias, Atheists are not welcome in Pakistan. Yes, please migrate out of Pakistan. The world if aware of the condition of Pakistan and I'm sure it won't be much hard to get asylum in a Western Liberal country. I am an Ex-Muslim and just because I left Islam I get plenty of death threats and I'm not welcome in Pakistan. I miss it a lot, but what can I do?

    • About a quarter of century ago (to be precise it was Jan 1990) I was studying at the University of Leeds doing my masters in clinical and behavioural sciences. It was a day release course from my work. The first juma in Leeds was a surprise; people from all nationalities gathered and said their Juma in a church which was graciously offered without any strings attached. SOMETHING TO REFLECT ON.

  5. People are suppressed in many ways and this violent behavior towards minorities is a reaction to that suppression over the years. The victims and assaulter are both in dire need of economic and psychological help, not from the Government, but from within themselves. As far as religion is concerned. Pakistanis never were and will never be religious people. They only pose to show their religiosity. Religion is used only to justify an act.

I am not advocating jahil Muslim mob but actually yeh moamla aisa tha kay Masjid kay paas unchi awaz main ganay laga kar kuch sharabi maseehi bhai ghul ghapara kar rahay thay, Imam sahib nay araam say 2, 4 baar samjhaya kay namaz ka time hai …. aap thora sabr farma lain.       How drunk were the Sikh who got beheaded earlier this year? How drunk were the hindu girl who were abducted last year? Roughly saying there were hundreds of complaints from Hindu families that there daughters were being abducted by "not drunk Muslim guys" and forcefully being converted.
      How drunk was the eleven year old girl in Islamabad "Rimsha Mash" that was labeled a blasphmer. Oh sorry, my bad she was has downsyndrome. Is that the new "drunk"

      And those drunk Shias who were shot a few weeks back, I'm sure the Imam must have kindly asked them to not be Shias anymore 2-4 times and they must have tortured the Imam.

      1947 when Pakistan came into being, minorities were 23% of total population
      Currently 2%, and no not all of them got impressed and converted, most had to face a few of the above mentioned "drunk" incidents.

      Some more stats if I may. Since Jan 1st, 2013 about 31 cases of rape, abduction, murder, kidnapping, forceful conversion from minorities have been reported till March 3rd 2013.

      I'm sure all of these people must be "drunk" and the Imams must have told them to clean up the act or …… the above mentioned

How law and religion were used in God's people. religion must apply each one of us to talk and walk like HE made us as brothers and sisters, for older we should respect as uncles as we respect our parents. To youngsters we should respect as we they are our brothers and sisters and to how we marries in front of so many witnesses husband love to your wife and to wife respect your husband because he is your head.   18. Why would you not disrespect Islam? Look at it's followers and what they do. Are people like this deserving of respect? Are they earning it or demanding it? Where are the people of law and order during this? What if a government were doing this to it's own people? You are making Islam look like it is nothing but a bunch of unruly animals.     All people can be true messengers of God if they choose to be … What is important is the message and the person delivering that message. I know some of the truly faithful in Christianity have trouble understanding the teachings of "Muhammad" peace upon him, because of the news, and because of people who actually break the Holy Words and teachings of Islam , but we are all brothers for the same cause. Peace , dignity, love,honor, and the true divine priceless value of a single soul. Sometimes people offend God, for the love of God … per-say …and their message gets lost in their own hate,greed and violence … This is why people lose faith in Christianity and Islam because of these events and it hurts me the most because it is a true false misrepresentation of the "Holy Word".     There are only divisions among us because people make them to protect their fears, doubts and to support their own ignorance. Violence is the order of the day … but it doesn't have to be. Resist temptation, overcome fear and never doubt and you will soon overcome all things. People are killing other people for land,money, honor, but if they would only STOP! , and listen to the spilled blood of their children, sisters brothers, fathers , mothers uncles and loved ones and all those that where slain for these earthly things, they would hear them crying out for "PEACE!!!".     • Thank you I was trying to comment in a similar fashion but you have said it better. History shows us that violence only leads to violence and the bullet and violence do not change the situation they only alienate more. Think of the children who will grow up with the memory of what happened to them. Unless they come under some influence of the right people they will resort to violence. I am glad to say that my experience of living in Gujranwala has a lot more happy memories than this sad event..

  32. There is great revival in pakistan, especially in the Lahore area. Allah of Quran , god of this world, hates this and his people retaliate. Sad as it is, but the GOOD thing that will come out of it is , that people will be aware how STUPID Islam religion is and more and more people will start to question what they believe.

The failure of the Punjab government to prosecute any of the 70 accused held responsible for the gory incident had compelled the family head to leave Pakistan after the Punjab police failed to arrest the culprits who were hurling death threats to him for pursuing the case.

I pray that God strengthens their precious heart with His grace and that they will continue to walk in Faith and not deny Jesus because of the suffering and hardship they endure. Soon this life and all it's injustices they have suffered will be over, and they will live in heaven for eternity with Him.

It is sad that this colony dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi, a man of peace, should suffer in this way., and that christian children have to grow up in fear, constantly frightened of harassment that they stay indoors. So many muslims claim islam to be also a religion of peace. This seems to suggest the opposite. Let us both support and encourage the peacemakers. And let the authorities discipline the Imam.

    Lahore incident is not far at the time of accident Media NGO’s and many other liberal
    People raise their voice against Muslims and Islam but at the end the issue was Land &
    Political people were involved. Media & NGO’s & their agent don’t miss the opportunity to defame Islam & Muslim.
