Caretaker cabinet only focused on holding free, fair elections: Mirza

The caretaker cabinet is only focused on holding free and fair elections and the issues facing the Law Department will be taken up by the next regime, caretaker Punjab Law Minister Shams Mehmood Mirza said on Wednesday.

He expressed these views during his first visit to the Law and Parliamentary Affairs Department.

Law Secretary Abul Hassan Najmi, Law Director Mohsin Abbas Syed and other departmental high ups briefed the law minister on the working of the department.

The department plays an important role in giving advice to the provincial chief executive on various important matters besides giving input on any legal matter where the Punjab government is involved.

The law minister was apprised of the lack of trained human resource along with other issues facing the department. However, the minister said the caretaker set up only had the mandate to hold free and fair elections and any issues with the departments would be taken up by the next regime.

The minister’s comments have led many to term the current caretaker cabinet “toothless”.

“This passes across a very bad message to the people at large working in various departments because the government servants will now work with impunity and incidents of violations will rise,” a senior official said.
