Tuesday was a very tough day for former lawmakers having fake degrees and holding dual nationalities, as three of them were imprisoned on the orders of the Supreme Court.
According to details, the first decision came against former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa MPA Khalifa Abdul Qayyum in a fake degree case in the court of a Dera Ismail Khan additional district and sessions judge.
The judge sentenced Qayyum to three years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on him. Qayyum had turned out successful in the 2008 election as an independent candidate.
Following the announcement of the judgement, Qayyum was taken into custody and sent to jail.
Former federal minister Humayun Aziz Kurd was sentenced to one year in prison and fined Rs 5,000 for holding a fake degree. Kurd, who won the 2008 elections from NA-267, was arrested following the sentence.
Meanwhile, the arrest warrants of former parliamentarians Nasir Shah and Maulvi Rozuddin were also issued. Former MPA Mir Badshah Qaisarani was also indicted.
Meanwhile, the Foreign Office submitted a report relating to the dual nationality of former PPP MNA Rai Ghulam Mujtaba Kharal in the Supreme Court on Tuesday.
According to the report, the fact that Kharal had given up his Canadian nationality could not be confirmed.
Later, the SC adjourned the hearing into the case until April 8.
On Monday, former parliamentarians Jamshed Dasti and Amir Yar Waran had been charged for having fake degrees.
During the hearing of Dasti’s case on Tuesday, his lawyer sought more time. The hearing was adjourned until today (Wednesday).
The degree of former JUI-F MNA Maulvi Agha Muhammad was declared fake by the Election Commission of Pakistan and the case was sent to the sessions judge.
