After a long ban on Lahore’s famous kite-flying festival, Punjab Chief Minister Najam Sethi has rekindled hope that the city’s biggest cultural festival will be resumed.

According to details, the ban on kite-flying is likely to be lifted soon. Sources said that Sethi has sought an action plan from various departments and City District Government Lahore (CDGL) to resume the kite-flying festivities.

Last November, the CDGL had initiated an extensive exercise, holding a couple of meetings with various stakeholders, including police, social and cultural activists, legal experts, kite-flying associations and public representatives, to discuss the idea of reviving the cultural event in the city. However, the meetings could not take any decisive shape as the city police refused to guarantee a casualty-free Basant.

However, sources revealed that the interim chief minister has sought a comprehensive plan to re-establish Basant, and the ban is likely to be lifted on April 13.

However, officials maintained that the lifting of the ban was only an idea that had been proposed and nothing had been finalised so far.

  3. Being a Lahorei & a fan of "Kite Flying" since childhood, I'm in favor of Basant Festival. But Basant should be allowed ONLY AFTER proper legislation after consulting with all stakeholders. Else, it's a disaster waiting to happen.
