Power to women: Badam Zari, Nusrat Begum become first females to contest elections in FATA

In a major development, two women from Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (FATA), made history by becoming the first females to file their nomination papers to contest in elections from the male-dominated constituencies of Bajaur and Lower Dir.

According to details, Badam Zari became the first woman to file her nomination papers from NA-44 in Bajaur. Rurning Officer Asad Sarwar confirmed the filing of the papers.

Talking to journalists, Zari said that she wanted address the difficulties faced by women in her area. She expressed the hope that she would get support from residents of her area, especially women. She further said that no lawmaker had raised the problems faced by women in Bajaur in the National Assembly. Moreover, she said that she would launch her election campaign soon.

Furthermore, Nusrat Begum, wife of Karim Khan, became the first woman in Lower Dir to contest in elections.

Talking to journalists, Nusrat Begum, who was the district vice president of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI), said she would contest election as an independent candidate because her party had allotted ticket to another candidate.

“All the people who won from the constituency in the past did nothing for people’s betterment,” she said, adding that if elected she would work to provide basic amenities to the people, especially women, children and minorities.

  1. what? no comments? this is the 1st time in years that you see positive things being said about Pak in the US. if anything happens to these women, Pak's reputation, as well as Islam's, will be dragged thru the mud yet again. please keep these women safe and support their right to run for office.

  2. As an Australian woman I am in awe of the women who bravely struggle for the rights of others in countries where it is terribly unsafe to do so. What great example to the world when one is prepared to put all on the line for the betterment of others. Badam Zari is a courageous woman a shining light who deserves respect and support from all especially her sisters worldwide.
