Australia’s captain Michael Clarke was taken by ambulance to Sutherland hospital in Sydney overnight after suffering a severe bout of gastroenteritis.

Having returned home early from the Test tour of India due to back and hamstring problems that have since ruled him out of the IPL, Clarke was waylaid by the stomach trouble on Sunday night and treated overnight before returning to his home on Monday.

“Cricket Australia today advised that Michael Clarke was hospitalised overnight with gastroenteritis,” a CA statement said. “Clarke has since been discharged from hospital and CA confirms that he is recovering at home.”

Clarke is working to return to fitness in time for the Champions Trophy tournament in England which serves as a precursor to this year’s Ashes series.
