Basant on the cards

The kite-thirsty skies of the metropolitan are expected be have their demands met on April 13 or 14, Pakistan Today has learnt. Officials of the City District Government Lahore will meet today to finalise the Basant issue.

It had been long since the citizens had been demanding government to lift the ban on Basant, while another stratum of the society had been up against the festival because the use of chemical string in kite flying caused severe twine injuries, also sometimes leading to deaths.

While the second coming of Basant is considered by many a sigh of relief for people belonging to the kite flying industry, citizens in opposition of the festival fear twine accidents which will ensue with kite-flying.

Citizens, with a more optimistic view, welcome the festival and propose that government should regulate this festival and make sure that chemical and metal twines are not used.

“We are very happy and I think we should enjoy this event and not make it complicated with the use of arms or chemical string. We used to spend a large amount of money to celebrate this event. The government should make sure that event is celebrated safely,” Aslam Mujahid, a citizen, told Pakistan Today.

Officials from the Kite Flying Association also welcome the event on the premise that the festival will not only bring back tourists in the province, leading to a boom in businesses and increased revenues, but will also bring back to life the kite makers who had lost their livelihood with the ban on the festival.

“We warmly welcome the decision of the government. This step gave a breath of life to the kite business. It will also help in portraying a soft image of the country and bring back the tourists who used to come especially for the festival,” an official from the Lahore Kite Flying Association told Pakistan Today.

  5. Basant is a great festival to enjoy togetha ..People died in accident daily so y nwt v stops transportation..? Dex is occasion of joy so gournmet shud give us da permission to enjoy it 🙂

  10. Dear Pakistan Today Team & All readers / any Media Person….. Nice to see this News,… I still remember almost 7 years back I was University student , when they Ban on Basant Festival, due to Costly Asset Loss of WAPDA & Precious Lives……. at that time I send 1 proposal to GOVT Bodies & Kite Flying Associations, but no one take that serious…….. 2 technical solutions to protect against both dangers……. Asset Loss of WAPDA… include 20 – 50 Rs. monthly from each home to cover all Electrical wires with PVC Pipe (as charging TV License Fee), it will reduce almost 90% of their lose during Basant or normal days ……… for Life Saving…. 1 Brother suggest Wire over Bike,thats also Good, but …. if GOVT Tie Hard Metalic Wire on top of Light Poles which mostly posted in road center greenbelt…… Twin (dorr) will not drop cross wise to road, which cut throats…. Parallel Twin Fall is not as dangerous as Cross one…… other precautions are also necessary as thin Twin (bareek dorr) ban on Chemical, & Metalic wire….. i hope by this way, we can save loss of Precious Lives & Asset of Pakistan WAPDA………

  13. Yup Its indeed a good news though oppesed by the conservative Mullas who just go for their Halwaas and maandaas blocked heads sheer goofs ill-logical ppl.
    But I would like to add a few more words to those Drinkers and those who do Airial Firing and other stuff like that please please do'nt deprive young kids from this beautiful entertaiment just bcoz of your wrong-doings and remain well-wishers of those who make such beautiful kites for you to earn their bread.
    Dont use thick threads, Chemical Twins and other Banned products.

  16. What ever the safety precautions you might take, you cannot stop every one not to use such life threatening threads and chemical stuff.
    You can't hold every one's hand not to use such things, and so you might enjoy 24hours of your life, wasting money on basant accessories, but on the other hand in those 24 hours, many of people might be "celebrating" loss of their love ones.
    If you really have to burn your money in air, go far far away from city / Villages / towns, so that your money won't kill any precious life.
