Just a week after leading his team to victory against Pakistan with a superb knock, Proteas ODI captain AB de Villiers has another very important weekend ahead.
The Proteas wicketkeeper will tie the knot with his long-time girlfriend Danielle Swart this afternoon.
Although no details have been released about the wedding, De Villiers’ Proteas teammate and friend Paul Harris confirmed via his Twitter account that the two would be getting married today.
Harris tweeted: “Can’t wait for Saturday!! There will be a few cries of anguish from all the ladies as the Prince of Pretoria @ABdevilliers17 ties the knot!”
De Villiers’s fiancée also confirmed on Twitter two weeks ago that she would be getting married soon.
The Pretoria-born cricketer proposed to his girlfriend in India last April while on tour. The 29-year-old popped the question to Swart at the romantic monument Taj Mahal.
Swart, 24, who lives and works in Cape Town, met De Villiers six years ago at her father’s lodge outside Bela-Bela (Warmbaths) in Limpopo.
Speaking to an Indian news publication last year, Swart spoke very fondly of De Villiers and their relationship.
“Our families are really good friends. In fact, I first met AB in my dad’s farm and over the years I really got to know him and respect him a lot,” Swart said.
“AB is so different when he is not playing. I love his sense of humour and the way he connects with his family.
“He is a family-oriented man and is very close to them and shares everything with them, which is a rare quality these days.”
Although they’ve remained close friends for the last six year, the couple’s love only blossomed two years ago.
Swart accompanied De Villiers to Graeme Smith and Irish pop star Morgan Deane’s wedding last year.
Details of where De Villiers will marry are unknown, as the couple are said to prefer keeping their private life out of the spotlight.
However friends of the couple tweeted yesterday that they had arrived in the “bush” for the wedding.
