SC demands detailed report on Sadiq’s arrest, repatriation

The Supreme Court has summoned all relevant documents and details of OGRA’s implementation by accountability court of the verdict against former OGRA chairman Tauqeer Sadiq.

A two-member bench headed by Justice Jawad S Khawaja on Monday said the court wanted to see whether legal procedures were being adopted.

Justice Khawaja said a favourable environment was being created before the arrival and appearance of Sadiq in the witness box and “there are also a considerable number of doubts in the case-file of NAB’s prosecutor general”.

The judge said deliberate problems were being created in the case.

The court expressed its displeasure at the incomplete measures being taken for the return of Sadiq to Pakistan.

Briefing the court, NAB said all relevant steps were being taken to ensure Sadiq’s return to Pakistan, citing the available extradition accord between Pakistan and the UAE, which had so far cost Dirham 60,000, while efforts to get Sadiq declared a proclaimed offender were almost complete.

Khwaja Haris said the culprit would only be handed over to Pakistan after completion of all legal procedures.

Haris said the next review of the case by the UAE courts was to be held on April 15, and any lacunas in documentation or failure to decide the issue could result in release of Sadiq by the UAE authorities.

Adjourning the next hearing until April 3, Justice Khawaja ordered immediate implementation of confiscation of Sadiq and his associates’ property and submit a report to court at the earliest.
