A man committed suicide on Friday by setting himself alight outside the Parliament House in Islamabad on Monday, a hospital official said. Fazal Rabi, 26, who hailed from Peshawar doused fuel over his body before setting himself alight, ASI Azmat Ali told Pakistan Today, adding that he was rushed to a hospital in a serious condition where he succumbed to his injuries.
“After witnessing Fazal’s attempt at self-immolation, a passerby and some police officers deployed at the parliament house rushed to save his life and took him to PIMS,” said Azmat Ali.
A doctor at the burns unit of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) said Rabi was in a critical condition in the intensive care unit and died a few hours after the incident.
“He had 90 percent burns. Doctors tried their best but they could not save his life,” the doctor said.
Azmat Ali said that police would initiate an investigation to find out what forced Rabi to commit suicide.
However, Pakistan Today found out that Fazal Rabi had been arrested on February 10 for his alleged involvement in a narcotics case and was released on bail nine days later on February 19 this year.
Almost two years ago on October 24, 2011, an unemployed Pakistani father of two had also committed suicide by setting himself on fire outside the parliament house.
