Tomic sets up Murray clash in Miami

Australian Bernard Tomic set up a meeting with second seed Andy Murray by defeating Marc Gicquel on Thursday in the Sony Open in Miami.

The British star was handed a first-round bye at the Masters 1000 tournament and will face Tomic, regarded as one of the rising stars of the ATP World Tour.

Tomic hit back from a break down in the first set to get past Gicquel 7-5 7-6 (7/3).

Jarkko Nieminen of Finland rallied from a set down to sink Argentina’s David Nalbandian 2-6 6-4 6-3 in one hour 49 minutes.

Serbia’s Viktor Troicki advanced with a 6-2 6-3 success against Spain’s Pablo Andujar, while Belgium’s David Goffin defeated Dutchman Robin Haase 7-6 (7/4) 3-6 6-1 and Taipei’s Yen-Hsun Lu got the better of American Robby Ginepri 7-5 6-1.

Olivier Rochus was leading Tatsuma Ito 4-6 6-4 3-1 when the Japanese player retired injured, while Guido Pella and Carlos Berlocq were just three games into their all-Argentinian clash when the latter said he was unable to continue with a knee injury.

Colombian pair Alejandro Falla and Santiago Giraldo had straight-sets victories over Go Soeda and Rhyne Williams, respectively, while other first-round winners included Daniel Gimeno-Traver, Lukasz Kubot, Ivan Dodig and Thomaz Bellucci.
