Although Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti died some seven years ago, he appears in the registered voters list compiled by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Pakistan Today has learnt.
Reliable sources in the election watchdog told Pakistan Today on Friday that Bugti tribe has warned the local election staff of dire consequences if they “dare” to remove Bugti’s name from the voters list.
The local staff reported the matter to the Quetta provincial election commissioner. However, the matter was ultimately reported to the ECP secretariat by the said commissioner.
In his letter to the ECP secretariat on March 21, 2013, the provincial election commissioner sought help on the issue. He said Bugti’s name appears at serial no 143, but the Bugti tribe is threatening the election staff if they remove the name, apparently because they are not ready to accept the death of their chief.
Sources said in the next couple of days, the ECP will take up the issue and respond to the provincial election commissioner.
Akbar Khan Bugti, head of the Bugti tribe, served as minister for state for interior, governor and chief minister of Balochistan. He was killed in an army operation in 2006 in a cave in Kohlu.
Later, his heirs registered an FIR against the then president, General Pervez Musharraf, for killing their chief and his companions.
