The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to allot the symbol of a closed book to the Jamiat Uleme-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) as its election symbol.

Earlier, the ECP had allotted the image of an open book to the JUI-F.

IHC Chief Justice Anwar Khan Kasi and Justice Shoukat Aziz Siddiqui resumed the hearing into the case. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court directed the ECP to allot the symbol of a closed book to the JUI-F.

During the last hearing, the same bench had suspended the ECP’s verdict of issuing the symbol of an open book to the party.

In his petition, JUI-F General Secretary Abdul Ghafoor Haideri had challenged the ECP’s verdict and had requested the court to direct the commission to allot it closed book as an election emblem.

Through his counsel, the JUI-F leader pleaded that his party had been contesting elections since 1996 with a closed book as an election symbol, but now the ECP had changed his party’s election symbol. “The symbol of a closed book is being used by the petitioner for decades, but it has been replaced with an open book,” said the petition.
