At least 17 people were killed and more than 30 injured in a car bomb explosion at the Jalozai Refugee Camp near Peshawar on Thursday.
The victims included a worker of a non governmental organisation Humaira, a policeman and two children.
An official said the explosion occurred when a large number of internally displaced persons (IDP’s) were standing in a queue to get registered and receive food ration. The explosion was so severe that most of victims were killed on the spot.
Behroz Khan, a police officer, told Pakistan Today that unidentified saboteurs had planted 35 to 40 kilogrammes of explosives in a pick-up parked near the distribution center. Several other vehicles were also blown up to pieces as a result of the explosion.
The police officer said 17 people had died and around 30 had been injured, adding that the condition of several of the injured was sated to be critical.
Security forces and volunteers from various organisations rushed to the site soon after the blast and took the injured to hospitals.
Dr Gohar Ali of LadyReadingHospital said they had received 29 injured while the Nowshehra deputy commissioner said 18 people had been admitted to Pabbi and Noshehra hospitals. He said they also received nine bodies.
No one has claimed the responsibility for the explosion so far but officials believe it is a doing of the Taliban.
Majority of the victims belonged to Khyber Agency’s TirrahValley.
