There was uproar in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Saturday over calls to denounce Pakistan National Assembly’s (NA) support to Afzal Guru.
The demand to pass a resolution against Pakistan was made by members of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) and Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP).
Speaker Mubarak Gul, however, did not entertain the plea, saying the matter had already been discussed and debated by the Indian Parliament, and the state assembly need not pass such a resolution.
Agitated members of the BJP and JKNPP staged a walk out in protest.
JKNPP party leader in the assembly Harsh Dev Singh criticised the government’s attitude on the issue.
He said Omar Abdullah’s government was adopting “double standards” because the government had discussed Afzal Guru’s hanging but denied permission to pass a resolution against Pakistan in national interest.
