The Supreme Court (SC) has allowed seven days to former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani to again file his review petition, saying a larger bench will be formed on this count.

A three-member SC bench presided over by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry took up the case on Wednesday.

Gilani appeared in the court in person.

The CJP said two points in his petition required explanation. “First you have not challenged the verdict given by the seven-member bench, whereby you were declared disqualified. Secondly your petition is time barred and if you want to challenge the decision then we can form a new bench.”

The CJP added that the Swiss authorities had sent a letter whereby they had informed the court that they could not reopen cases against the president.

Gilani said, “Please for the bench and allow me time so that I can file the review petition again.”

Later talking to reporters, Gilani said the court had given him seven days to file the review petition again, adding that a seven-member bench will be also be formed to hear the petition.

“I have come to the court to seek revocation of my disqualification. I am not repentant over what I have done”, he added.

“Later, the counsel for the sitting prime minister pursued the same stance what I had taken and that is that the president enjoys immunity in all cases. This immunity has been granted not only in his own country but also in other countries. The only difference is that my stance was not accepted while that of the incumbent prime minister has been accepted,” he said.

  1. Pakistan will (hopefully) not see a more stupid and more corrupt PM. He is still harping about immunity whereas the case is for the "contempt of the court" for not carrying out SC's order.
