National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza strongly condemned on Sunday the incident of burning of the houses of Christian community by a mob in Lahore’s Badami Bagh area. The speaker, while expressing grave concern over the incident, asked the provincial government to ensure safety and security of lives and property of the citizens and advised them to hold a thorough inquiry into the unfortunate incident. Dr Fehmida said that safeguarding the rights of all citizens, including religious minorities was the prime responsibility of the government and it would continue undertaking every effort for the protection of their rights as enshrined in the constitution of Pakistan. She said that such acts of vandalism against minorities not only tarnished the image of the religion but was also detrimental to interfaith harmony and law and order in the country.
