Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Chaudhry has taken suo motu notice of the Joseph Colony attack, according to a private TV channel on Sunday.
The CJP has summoned the Punjab inspector general (IG) and the Punjab advocate general. He also directed them to submit a comprehensive report in this regard.
On March 9, a 3,000-strong mob set ablaze more than 150 Christian houses in the Joseph Colony over alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by Sawan Masih, a 28-year-old Christian sanitation worker.
Shahid Imran, complainant in the FIR registered against Masih, said Sawan used to say bad things against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). On March 7, Imran said, Sawan again passed such remarks, he told his friend Shafiq, who took out a knife and went straight to Sawan’s house, but to no avail. On March 8, he gathered more people after attending prayers led by Qari Saifullah. Imran said Saifullah told them that they would cut Sawan into pieces.
The Lahore Police claimed to have arrested around 100 suspected miscreants for attacking the Christian colony on Saturday.
Ordering a judicial inquiry, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said arsonists would be tried in anti-terrorism courts. He also announced that SSP Sohail Sukhera and SP Multan Khan have been made OSDs, whereas the DSP and SHO concerned have been suspended. Christians across the country protested against the attacks.
Another political motivated suo motu. With this suo motu could CJ change the way mullahs' understanding of blasphemy or can he do away with blasphemy laws from statue book? The answer to this question is an emphatic NO. This is wastage of public time and money. This suo motu will not bring about anything positive rather create more confusion. But this will definitely greatly advance his political ambitions at the expiry of his tenure, only if he did not ask for extension.
.
Only if suo motus' laid eggs …
.
Once again, the CJP is showing the government how it is done.
Summoning people and shaking them up.
