Maria Sharapova made short work of 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone with a 6-2 6-1 win in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.
World number three Sharapova, who won the Indian Wells title in 2006, dropped nine points on serve in her impressive opening to the tournament.
The Russian took all six break points in a win which was completed in just over an hour.
She will meet Carla Suarez Navarro in the third round after she won an all-Spanish contest with Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-1 6-1.
Fifth seed Petra Kvitova shared 11 breaks of serve with Olga Govortsova before prevailing 6-4 3-6 6-3.
For the Czech player it was not the best way to celebrate her 23rd birthday after spending two hours and 22 minutes on court.
Kvitova goes on to face Ukrainian qualifier Lesia Tsurenko who overcame Yaroslava Shvedova 6-1 3-6 6-1.
World number 11 Marion Bartoli took five of 12 break points on her way to defeating Chanelle Scheepers 6-3 6-3.
Svetlana Kuznetsova overcame a disastrous start to beat 2010 champion Jelena Jankovic 0-6 6-2 7-5 in just over two hours.
Sixth seed Sara Errani also needed three sets to advance as she beat Lourdes Dimonguez Lino 6-2 3-6 6-3 in just over two hours.
Errani will meet Sweden’s Johanna Larsson who beat number 26 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-5 6-1.
Italian 14th seed Roberta Vinci accounted for Kazakh player Ksenia Pervak 6-3 6-4.
There were also wins for Sara Errani, Dominika Cibulkova, Maria Kirilenko and Sorana Cirstea.
Qualifier Ivo Karlovic saved one match point to edge American wild card Jack Sock 3-6 7-6 (10/8) 6-2 in the men’s first round.
The Croat trailed 7-8 in the second set tie-break, but fought back to win in one hour and 53 minutes to set up a meeting with American number 23 seed Sam Querrey.
Australian qualifier Matthew Ebden, who reached the fourth round last year, beat Russian Andrey Kuznetsov 6-3 4-6 6-4, while German Philipp Petzschner beat fellow qualifier Dmitry Tursunov 6-4 6-4.
Australian Marinko Matosevic set up a second round clash with 14th seed Juan Monaco after beating Spanish wild card Tommy Robredo 7-5 6-2.
Spain’s Pablo Andujar will challenge 19th seed Tommy Haas after edging American wild card Steve Johnson 2-6 6-1 6-4.
Among the day’s other winners were Nikolay Davydenko, James Blake, Albert Ramos, Evgeny Donskoy, Bjorn Phau, Fabio Fognini and Carlos Berlocq.
Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska beat American Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-2 6-1 and there were also wins for Klara Zakopalova, Mallory Burdette and Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino.
In the men’s first round Michael Llodra, Yen-Hsun Lu, Bobby Reynolds and Daniel Gimeno-Traver went through.
