Pakistan lost Rs 90b in electricity theft, line losses

The national exchequer lost Rs 90 billion in the last five years in electricity theft and line losses.
Minister of State for Water and Power Tasnim Qureshi told the Senate that “a big mafia is behind the huge electricity theft”.
The Senate session, chaired by Nayyar Hussain Bokhari, was told by the ministry in a written response that FESCO, GEPCO, LESCO, MEPCO, IESCO, SEPCO, HESCO, PEPCO, and KESCO lost Rs 600 million, Rs 360 million, Rs 2.35 billion, Rs 280 million, Rs 3.66 billion, Rs 7.47 billion, Rs 16.17 billion, Rs 59 billion and Rs 90 billion respectively on account of theft and line losses.
Qureshi said the line losses were cut to Rs 20.5 billion by his efforts while Petroleum Adviser Dr Asim Hussain said the number of CNG stations should be decreased in the county, especially in Punjab.
