Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim on Thursday said the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was determined on conducting the general elections on time.

The CEC was talking to Finance Minister Saleem Mandviwalla at the ECP’s Secretariat where the two discussed the issue of funding for the elections.

Later, talking to reporters, the CEC said the ECP was facing a shortage of funds. “We require Rs 6 billion… but so far we have received only Rs 2 billion,” he said.

Clarifying the ECP’s stand on the elections, the CEC said the elections would be held on time, adding that all the arrangements had been finalised.

The finance minister assured the CEC that the government would release the required funds to the electoral body.
