An alleged robber died in police custody in Kotli Sattian Police Station on Tuesday. Although police claimed that the alleged robber died due to cardiac arrest, the family of the deceased blamed the police for not taking him to a hospital on time.
According to police officials, Afraz Ahmad, son of Rahim Dad, resident of Phaphril Tehsil Murree was arrested by Kotli Sattian Police on charges of robbery (FIR No 08/13) and was taken to Chowki Lahtrar, where his health began to deteriorate. “He was shifted to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Kotli Sattian where he died due to heart attack,” police officials said. On Wednesday morning, the body of the deceased was shifted to District Headquarters Hospital Rawalpindi for postmortem where the family members of the deceased protested against police for not giving Afraz’s proper aide. Fayyaz Ahmad, a cousin of the deceased, said Afraz was in police custody since the last four days but the investigation officer had deliberately ignored Afraz’s health. City Police Officer Azhar Hameed Khokhar suspended the Chowki Lahtrar Incharge Sub-Inspector Abdul Saboor, Investigation Officer Sub-Inspector Arshad Kaleem and two constables of Kotli Sattian Police for negligence and for not taking the deceased to hospital on time.
Saddar SP Waheed-ur-Rehman Khattak was appointed as an Inquiry Officer while a letter for a judicial Inquiry of the incident was also written by the police to the concerned District and Sessions Judge.
According to police officials, the accused was already involved in more than 24 cases of robberies.
