NGOs to be brought under govt’s radar

The National Assembly was assured on Wednesday that the government would order a nationwide survey of NGOs to scrutinise their functioning and would take action against the management of those involved in illegal activities.

The parliamentary secretary for interior, Rai Mujtaba Kharal said he would assign the task to the chief commissioner of Islamabad and to the relevant security agencies to collect data of NGOs working at federal, provincial and district level.

Moreover, he said the NGOs found involved in illegal activities would be brought to justice.

He said although no compliant had yet been received regarding the functioning of NGOs, the government would take action if any parliamentarian moved a complaint regarding any particular NGO.

To this, NA Deputy Speaker Faisal Karim Kundi said it was not the duty of the parliamentarians but the security agencies to keep check on the functioning as well as the funding sources of the NGOs.

He said the government should remain vigilant about the expenditures of the NGOs because there seems to be no such record to scrutinise their financing and performance.

The parliamentary secretary said the district administration could be asked to present an audit report of the NGOs functioning in the federal capital.

To a question, he said the NGOs functioning locally could be investigated to know as why they had left some of their projects in flood-hit areas incomplete.

He said the government would never allow the NGOs to finance terrorist organisations and asked the members to register complaints if there were any.
