Judges’ appointment committee made ineffective: Aitzaz

The Parliamentary Committee for the Appointment of Judges has been made ineffective due to non-implementation of its recommendations by the superior judiciary, said Senator Aitzaz Ahsan on Tuesday.
During a speech in the Senate regarding Supreme Court’s silence over the issue of judges’ dual nationality, Aitzaz said transparency in the appointment of judges, civil servants and parliamentarians must also be ensured.
He said the superior judiciary had rejected the recommendations of the committee.
“It appoints a person as a judge, who is rejected by the committee,” he added.
“The committee should write to the National Assembly Speaker and Senate Chairman that it should be disbanded,” he said.
Aitzaz said that the parliament should not surrender its authority on the issue. “The oath of a judge is a major impediment in keeping of dual nationality by the judge,” he noted.
He also alleged that some judges of the superior judiciary did even pay their taxes.
Farhatullah Babar, expressing dismay over not receiving an answer to his question regarding the names of dual-national judges, said that the SC Registrar should respect the parliament and answer its questions, which was necessary for the dignity of superior judiciary also.
“The Registrar has persistently denied disclosing of the names of dual-national judges. His reluctance in giving an answer showed that that there might be dual-national judges in the superior judiciary,” he said.
