The UN Security Council will focus on Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), president of the United Nations said on Tuesday.
The Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin, who holds the rotating presidency of the 15-nation body, during a press conference said that the Security Council will hold an open debate on Afghanistan on March 19.
The ministerial-level debate will be chaired by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and a renewal of the mandate of the UN mission in Afghanistan by an year would be discussed.
Churkin said; “the council is going to review the Secretary-General’s special report up to the signing of the peace and security cooperation framework for the DRC and the great lakes region on Feb. 24 in Addis” .
The Russian UN Ambassador added that a number of other issues including the “mandates of African Union mission in Somalia, support mission in Libya and integrated peace building office in Sierra Leone” would also be discussed
