The Grand Trunk Road, popularly known as GT Road, connecting Rawalpindi with Taxila and other parts of the country has developed ditches at many points which cause frequent accidents besides contributing to traffic jams.

The road has been in a dilapidated condition and has developed ditches but the concerned authorities were unmoved over the poor condition of the busiest road.

The road was repaired two to three years back but the recent rains had exposed the quality of material used by the contractors during the construction of the route connecting Rawalpindi with other parts of the country.

Talking to INP, transporters deplored the Punjab government for not repairing and maintaining the road, adding that uneven surface and deep ditches could cause severe traffic accidents.

“The dilapidated condition of the road not only disrupted traffic flow but is also dangerous to drive on,” Muhammad Akbar, a motorist, said.

Tehseen Ayub, a government employee, who frequently travels on the road, said driving on the road was a nightmare.

“We don’t know why the government is not taking an interest in public welfare projects. Is it waiting for the people to resort to agitation and force the government to solve their problems?” he said.

People from all walks of life, including transporters, traders and the civil society, demanded the Punjab government to launch re-carpeting of the road to redress the sufferings of the masses and to make travelling safer and more comfortable.
