Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Monday took notice of the carnage in Karachi where at least 45 people died and 150 injured in a huge explosion that ripped through a Shia-majority neighborhood called AbbasTown on Sunday.

The attention of the chief justice was drawn to the incident by the Registrar’s Office that claimed that the law enforcement agencies and other government officials did not reach the venue of the blast in time for the rescue operation, due to their presence in a private function to provide security and protocol to higher-ups.

The note further intimated that in the aftermath of similar bombings in Quetta, this incident should serve as an eye-opener for the government and security forces.

The incidents at Quetta led to the sacking of the provincial government, with calls also made for replacement of civil administration by the armed forces to provide security to citizens.

Taking notice of the incident the Chief Justice Chaudhry ordered that the issue be put up in court on Wednesday at Karachi.

Advocate General and PPO, Sindh were directed to “file a comprehensive report as prima facie since it appears that state and provincial government had failed to protect life and property of citizens.”
