Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (r) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim said on Sunday that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) would take all its decisions in accordance with the verdict of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
Talking to reporters, he said that a meeting of the ECP regarding the delimitation of constituencies in Karachi would be called soon. However, he questioned as to how delimitations could be done in Karachi without population census?
The Supreme Court, in its short verdict on the Karachi law and order case on November 26, had observed that delimitation of constituencies could be done even without population census. The Supreme Court had further observed that “it seems the ECP is not apparently keen to do delimitation of constituencies in Karachi.” The court had observed that constituencies in Karachi should be delimited in a manner that they comprise “mixed population” to avoid political polarisation and issued notice to the ECP secretary after an ECP official submitted that the process of delimitation of constituencies in the city could not be initiated.
