Public Sector Organisations are finding it extremely difficult to get the cream of students graduating from good universities of Pakistan. Many of them opt for corporate sector jobs and do not want to join the public sector due to the monotonous way of working and ineffectiveness.

In order to encourage fresh graduates to work in public sector, USAID-funded Assessment and Strengthening Program at LUMS, has planned to provide paid internships to LUMS students in Public Sector and Civil Society Organisations.

Planned for the summer of 2013, students will be sent to different public sector organisations, mostly Implementing Partners of USAID, for them to gain experience in working in public sector organizations.

Talking about the ASP-LUMS Internship Program, Jeffrey Bakken, USAID Deputy Mission Director expressed the hope that the students’ internship in Public Sector Organisations will motivate them to take up jobs in these organizations. Bakken further stated that talented human resources must be encouraged to join public sector organizations for improving their overall efficiency and effectiveness. He further expressed the hope that in this way both LUMS and USAID will be contributing to strengthening Pakistan’s institutions.

With the assistance of development sector and local universities programs like these will help develop interest in the working of public sector organisations.
