Solar panels, materials exempt from customs duty: NA told

The National Assembly was informed on Friday that the government is encouraging and providing incentives to promote solar energy in the country to overcome the prevalent power crisis.

Minister of State for Water and Power Tasneem Ahmad Qureshi apprised the House during question and hour session that three factories are assembling solar panels in the country. He said these companies are operating in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi.

He told that the solar panels and other equipment which transforms solar energy into electric energy are exempted from the customs duty to encourage the industry. He said that his ministry has recommended the replacement of diesel generators by solar panels as alternative source of energy.

Replying to a question, Tasneem Ahmad Qureshi said that two hundred and twenty-five thousand energy savers have been distributed by different power distribution companies throughout the country.
