National Assembly was informed on Thursday that the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) was producing 40,000 Computerized National Identity Cards on a daily basis.

Responding to a Calling Attention Notice, minister of state for interior informed the house that in some cases the verification prolongs but this was for scrutiny purposes regarding fake entries or duplication.

“NADRA processes CNICs within the stipulated time but when anybody desires a second CNIC, the system blocks it and then certain time is requires for proper verification”, he explained.

Answering a question, the minister did not rule out involvement of agents at various registration centres and ensured that he would visit these areas and take action against those involved in illegal activities.

Members National Assembly Sajid Ahmed, Shaikh Salahuddin, Abdul

Waseem, Muhammad Ayub Skeikh and Nahid Shahid Ali drew the attention of the minister towards delay in issuance of CNICs in Hyderabad and Sindh.

The members raised questions regarding delay in delivery and involvement of agents who charged extra money for issuance of CNICs due to which applicants are irked.

The minister said NADRA was created to facilitate every Pakistani and was producing documents which were acknowledged within the country and abroad. “Its performance was appreciable as it produces 40,000 cards daily and has the capacity to produce up to 70,000 cards per day,” he said.

“In all cases, cards are delivered before the due date and a delay occurs when there were doubtful entries or if any person tries to get a card in addition to the one he or she already possesses,” he said.

Answering another question, he said,”Registration centres are opened on the basis of population and if there is a centre needed in a certain area, the proposal could be considered”.

“Presently, 54 centres were working in Hyderabad, 66 in Sukkur and 57 in Karachi,” he said.
