Union of India on Thursday inflated its defense spending by 21 per cent to $42.7 billion.

The latest increase is likely to upset Pakistan, which has fought three wars with India since independence in 1947. India is one of the world’s largest arms procurer and the recent hike would raise the total defense spending of India to 2.3 trillion Indian rupees .
Chidambaram addressing the Indian parliament said that “I assure the house that constraints will not come in the way of providing any additional requirement for the security of the nation, nor would funding to social sectors reduce.

India has also planned to buy 126 French Rafale fighter jets for $12 billion and is shopping for some 400 combat helicopters worth tens of millions of dollars, as well as artillery, drones and electronic warfare systems. India and Russia in 2010 agreed to jointly build 250 advanced stealth fighter jets worth $25 billion.
New Delhi is also commissioning a nuclear-powered submarine as well as a range of nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles which can strike deep inside China.

  1. We must not lag behind in our defense preparedness. It does not matter what it costs. If Hafiz Saeed and the other notables of the DePC cannot come up with sufficient funds we can continue to eat grass for some more time.

  2. While the Pakistani govt. hikes corruption to $85.4 billion. President Zardari sends congrats to the whole nation & the CJ takes suo moto notices and thats that folks.

  3. With population growth rate of greater than 2.5 percent and using the equation, 1 muslim soldier = 10 hindu soldier, pakistan does not need to match india's defence spending.

  4. 21%???? Please get some facts in the article guys. It's a mere 5.3% hike.
Last year's budget estimate was Rs 1,93,407 crore. This year it is Rs 2,03,672 crore. Take a calculator do some calculation. It is 5.3%. And last year's estimate got slashed down into Rs 1,78,503 crore later. Even if you calculate with the revised amount, the percentage increase will be just 14%. From where did you get this 21% hike?????
