Defence Secretary General (r) Asif Yaseen on Wednesday said they are probing the matter related to the contract given to a US firm for construction of a compound at Karachi airport.

In a meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee for Defence, the secretary said the tender for the contract was released in the UAE. He said the intelligence agencies had nothing to do with the electoral process, and such institutions were only to make the security measures more effective.

He also said the educational institutions running under the administration of the Defence Ministry did not receive any assistance from the government. However, the body recommended that the ordinary teachers of such institutions should be regularised.

The body members questioned why PIA flights do not fly from Pakistan to the US. At this, the secretary observed that the flights were stopped after the 9/11 incident. Now flights fly from Pakistan to Ireland as an interim measure, he added.
