Hundreds of people have attended the funerals of 10 men in Takhar Province, in Afghanistan’s northeast, who were recently hanged in Iran reportedly on charges of drug smuggling.
Radio Free Afghanistan’s report from Takhar said that mourners in Kalafgan district of the province staged a protest against the executions, calling on the Afghan government and the United Nations to stop the executions. Residents of Kalafgan district say they have buried the bodies of 80 people in the last six months who have been executed in Iran.
In recent years, Kabul has maintained that many Afghans have been sentenced to death in Iran on charges of drug smuggling charges. NNI
