Punjab Governor Mahmood Ahmed on Monday directed the Punjab University to honor its “one man, one post” formula which was approved by the university’s syndicate in 2006.

The rift between the faculty of PU was widening as a few professors alleged that many blue eyed boys of the Vice chancellor have been awarded with more than one academic and administrative posts. The practice has now started annoying the Governor too and he recently sent back a summary of appointing Prof Dr Khan Raas Masood as dean Faculty of Life Sciences, objecting that the candidate already holds posts of university’s registrar as well as chairman of the Department of Botany.

The governor also objected on the case of Prof Dr Liaqat Ali, who is Principal Hailey College of Commerce, acting dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences, dean Faculty of Commerce and controller of examinations. The Governor directed PU and the HEC to submit a written reply on the institution’s practice of bestowing more than one posts on a few chosen professors.

Moreover, a summary regarding the dean Faculty of Education was also moved to the governor/chancellor which too was sent back to the department. The panel comprised Prof Dr Maher Muhammad Saeed Akhtar, chairman of Department of Islamic Education at PU Institute of Education & Research (IER), Prof Dr Mumtaz Akhter, director of the IER, and Prof Dr Muhammad Saeed Shahid, chairman Department of Elementary Education at the IER.

According to the sources, a summary was sent back as one of the candidates, Prof Dr Muhammad Saeed Shahid, would retire in May this year while there was also confusion over the seniority of Prof Dr Maher Muhammad Saeed Akhtar and Prof Dr Mumtaz Akhter. Sources said that the PU administration had mentioned that Prof Dr Mumtaz Akhter was senior to Prof Maher while the department opposed the stance.

It is reliably learnt that the PU administration had also forwarded negative comments/observations against Prof Maher, maintaining that he was involved in politics at the campus and also supported IJT at the PU. The sources added that PU had recommended Prof Dr Syed Saeedul Hassan and Prof Dr Mubashar Ahmad for the post of dean Faculty of Pharmacy, however, the governor/chancellor has yet to approve any one of them for the said post.
